Mayo Volunteer Centre is encouraging charities to embrace new kinds of volunteers

ayo Volunteer Centre is encouraging not for profit organisations to increase their understanding of new ways of volunteering – as National Volunteering Week comes to an end this Sunday, May 22. The importance of volunteers was highlighted in a new survey of 400 volunteer involving organisations carried out by Volunteer Ireland and the network of Volunteer Centres. The survey found that 53 per cent of organisations that involve volunteers said they could not survive without them.

In response to a recent story that circulated in the news that featured a husky by the name of Macari, who was the subject of horrific animal abuse when his eyes were shot with pellet guns, Carbon nightclub Galway have raised over €1,000 from their recent ‘Zoology’ fundraiser in aid of the Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA).

THE GALWAY International Arts Festival is encouraging people to volunteer with the festival. Volunteer co-ordinators Sheila Quinn and Cian McCarthy will do their utmost to match people’s preferences with their available time. Once people have joined up, the festival will have an informal 10-minute interview and an induction evening before starting. Volunteers will be able to work as Festival Ambassadors; invigilators in the Festival galleries; stewards in the Big Top, as part of on the street teams, etc.
